Characteristics and evaluation methods of developmental
dysgraphia: Research contribution to educational and clinical reasoning
Sara Rosenblum University of Haifa
Handwriting is a complex human skill, and a considerable percentage of
school-aged children are dealing with handwriting deficiencies that require
extra educational or clinical intervention. Research results as well as
theoretical publications enrich the educational/clinical reasoning process
and constitute a basis for evaluation and intervention methods that relate
to the individual, his/her occupation (handwriting), and the environment.
The aim of the current manuscript is to survey the characteristics of
handwriting deficiencies, their frequency, and their broader implications
for the individual’s everyday life. Furthermore, a survey of the available
handwriting deficiency screening tools will be presented. Results of studies
on handwriting deficiency are also briefly presented. Finally, the possible
clinical implications of studies on the handwriting process among
individuals with handwriting deficiencies are suggested.
What should we assess in primary handwriting? Jane Medwell, Steve
Strand and David Wray, Institute of Education, University of Warwick
This paper reports some of the findings of research into the relationship
between handwriting and composition in primary aged children. It suggests
that the importance of handwriting for composition has been underestimated
and that teachers may not be assessing the most important aspects of
handwriting.
Disturbances of Handwriting in Children with Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder Lara Tucha1, Klaus W. Lange2, Dorota Stasik2 ,
Susanne Walitza3 & Oliver Tucha1 (1) University of Plymouth, Plymouth (2)
University of Regensburg, Germany (3) University of Würzburg, Germany
The present article provides a brief review of studies in children with
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder regarding their handwriting
performance, the stimulant-induced changes of qualitative and quantitative
(i.e. kinematic) aspects of handwriting as well as the interaction between
conscious control of handwriting and fluency of handwriting movements.
Furthermore, an educational approach to the treatment of handwriting
disturbances in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is
discussed.
