Detailed Assessment of Speed of Handwriting (DASH)

Assess speed of handwriting

The Detailed Assessment of Speed of Handwriting is ideal for providing evidence for Access Arrangements for Key Stage 2 National Curriculum Tests and for General Qualifications. It can also play a role in identifying children with handwriting difficulties and provides relevant information for planning intervention.

The assessment includes five subtests, each testing a different aspect of handwriting speed. The subtests examine fine motor and precision skills, the speed of producing well known symbolic materials, the ability to alter speed of performance on two tasks with identical content and free writing competency.

 

Shore Handwriting Screener

Evaluate major components of effective handwriting

This screening tool enables you to examine handwriting skills in young children. The Shore Handwriting Screening covers many aspects of handwriting, including: Postural control, Hand control, Letter/number formation, Environmental focus. The manual also provides information about developmental handwriting milestones.

 

Handwriting Without Tears (HWT)

A comprehensive handwriting intervention programme

 Handwriting Without Tears is a systematic, developmentally-based system that assists children who have handwriting difficulties to improve their skills. This multi-sensory programme is suitable for use with individuals or groups.

Children progress from readiness materials to printing (Levels 1/2) to cursive script (Levels 3/4):

  • Early emphasis: Letters (Capitals and lower case) numbers, size, shape, placement.
  • Later emphasis: Directionality, smaller size, fluency, neatness, words to paragraphs
