Publication: Tips for Teaching

Handy leaflets on card (A3 folded to A4) or downloadable in colour. A quantity of ideas in a small space.

Topics include:

  • Speeding Up - Being able to write legibly at speed without too much conscious thought is an essential tool in schools today and yet little help is given to many children to acquire the skill. This leaflet is a compilation of ideas for helping students to write more quickly.
  • 'P' Checks - 'Posture, Pencil, Paper, Pressure' explained (see NHA poster) - useful checks to help a writer to be well prepared for writing. This leaflet can help to establish these good habits so that writing is easier and more comfortable.
  • 'S' Factors - 'Shape, Space, Size, Sitting, Stringing, Slant, Speed, Style' explained (see NHA poster) - A guide to teaching and a curriculum resource showing development of handwriting skills in the Early Years Foundation Stage......
  • 'S' Rules for quick assessment - These 7 'rules' make a quick checklist that can pinpoint where action needs to be focused to improve a student's handwriting. They can be useful to a busy teacher and can enable older children to monitor their own writing and work out action to be taken for themselves.
  • Above Year 4 - Many teachers are not aware that children still need help and support in developing their handwriting skills at the top of the junior school. It is such a help to children if they can begin secondary school confident that they can write legibly and quickly without having to think much about how they are doing it. They will then be able to concentrate their efforts on the content of their work in the secondary school. This leaflet gives ideas and tips to help a class of upper juniors to achieve that goal.
  • Patterns - Making patterns from basic shapes or repeated letters can be an enjoyable way of teaching and practising the movements necessary for fluent handwriting. Young children love making patterns and they can also be used by older students as warm-up activities. This pamphlet explains their use at different age levels.
  • Writing Grip - Many parents and teachers are very concerned about the way children hold their pens and pencils. This leaflet addresses the issues and gives practical tips on establishing an effective grip and whether or not to change one.
  • Handwriting Difficulties - The inside pages of this leaflet are a checklist of common indicators that children are finding the process of writing difficult and suggested possible strategies for alleviating the problems.
  • Helping the Older Student - from writing lesson to class work - Making the transition from handwriting lessons to writing in normal school situations is a difficult one. Some students can easily put improved handwriting skills into everyday use but most find this step really difficult. This leaflet sets out a series of graded activities that a teacher can use to assist a student to make this transition effectively.
  • Basic Steps - Many children find the process of writing more difficult than it needs to be because they have not learned each stage properly. (This might be because of absence or change of schools). Basic Steps gives the essential stages that need to be covered to make the process of learning straightforward.
  • Keyboarding - Touch Typing and Effective Use of Keyboards in Class. Digital communication is so important in 21C that the effective use of keyboards is an essential educational tool for all children.
  • Hands up for Handwriting - Lively, fun and useful warm-up exercises to prepare the hands and arms for handwriting. Devised by Ann Markee.
  • 12 for 8 - Buy all twelve of the above.
